Principal's Report

It’s been a very busy few weeks at Rosehill Secondary College.

Transition

As mentioned in the previous edition we have competed most of our obligations regarding Grade 6-7 transition and we now allow the process to be conducted centrally. We plan for an intake of 200 students as this enables the College to run a comprehensive teaching and learning program and ensures we can cater for the broad range of student capabilities and interests. We pride ourselves as a school that has a strong academic focus with many enrichment and enhancement programs that cater to our high ability students but is also able to provide exceptional opportunities for students across all key learning areas. Visual and Performing Arts, Music Program, Sports, Languages, Humanities, Commerce, Technology, Interpersonal Learning Programs and Science.

Year 10 Work Experience

In recent weeks our Year 10 students have been sourcing and organising their work experience which runs for two weeks at the end of this term, 17th - 28th June. We are one of a few schools that still offers such a comprehensive work experience program and that is testament to work of our Careers team who work tirelessly to ensure Rosehill students have maximum exposure to the workforce and potential career pathways. Once again, I have been suitably impressed with this cohorts’ capacity to secure some amazing placements. Some of the more interesting work experience placements I’ve approved include, work at Universities, Hospitals, health clinics, VCAT, Sound engineering, Game Design, GTAC – biomedical research to name just a few. Well done on securing such terrific experiences and opportunities.

Civics & Citizenship

Last week the Hon Bill Shorten took time out from his busy schedule to address our Year 10 students as part of the College’s Civics and Citizenship program. I was impressed with the quality of questions from the floor and the opportunity afforded to our Year 10 cohort to meet a senior Federal Government minister who was also more than happy to answer the many and varied questions. Thank you to Mr Liberidis for organising this visit.

Survey

Over the course of the next few weeks your children will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey about their schooling experience at Rosehill Secondary College. We are after information thus far into the year, and particularly this term. It is vitally important that children take the time to reflect and answer these questions sensibly and with thought. The data collected from this survey is important and is used to help determine the key areas of the college we think need improvement. A significant component of the current Strategic Plan (2022 - 2026) is developed with data such as this as a guide. Please take the time to have a conversation with your children about their thoughts and encourage them to reflect on their experience at Rosehill this year. Please refer to the previous newsletter edition on more information regarding this survey.

Author Visit

Next week a guest author, Will Kostakis, will visit our Year 8 cohort and share his experiences with our children. A passion and love of reading and writing is something we encourage in all children and is certainly a passion of mine. Currently I am reading a novel called, Babel by R.F Kuang and have just borrowed The Year of The Locust by Terry Hayes from our library.

ANZAC Day

This past Anzac Day we honoured all those who have worn our country's uniform in service, and fought for our country’s freedoms and rights.

On Anzac Day, we reflected on their service to our country. We honoured the values of the original Anzacs – loyalty, selflessness, courage – and the ways in which later generations continue to measure their own achievements against those of the soldiers who fought at Gallipoli.

Our Student Captain, Evan McKenna Burke, represented Rosehill Secondary College by laying a wreath on behalf of the college at the Dawn Service held at the RSL in East Keilor.

The Ode

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, not the years condemn,

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning

We will remember them

Lest we forget."

PE Uniform

The start of each term provides an opportunity for a reset and fresh start. We want to communicate with our college community the expectation around wearing the PE uniform. The school has a dedicated sports uniform that our student are expected to change in and out of for PE classes. We now have beautifully renovated facilities in the ECA to cater for all students. As of this term students will be expected to wear the correct uniform during PE.

In addition, when students represent the college at inter school sports it is expected that students wear the correct PE uniform. Our PE uniform has various garments to cater for students’ preference and different weather conditions. The college introduced a tracksuit pant with the school logo for the cooler months.

If students are not wearing the correct uniform, they will not be able to participate in inter school sports. If students need support with an item of the PE uniform, they can speak to their coordinator before the day of the sporting event.

All of the College uniform is available at Lowes, Airport West.

CSEF

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

If you have a current Health Care Card or Pension Card, you may be eligible for the Camps/Sport/Excursions Fund (CSEF) payment. This funding can be used towards excursions, camps and sporting activities that run throughout the year at Rosehill.

If you applied for CSEF in 2023, and are a current student, you do not need to complete an application form unless there has been a change in your family circumstances.

You will only need to submit a new application form in 2024 if any of the following changes occurred:

  • New student enrolments
  • Change in family circumstances.

Schools can accept and process applications up until the end of term two each year. CSEF payments are made to schools from March onwards.

Application forms are available via the department’s website, at the College Reception, or click on tab to access. Please complete and return this form to us along with a copy of your valid concession card.

Applications for 2024 will close in June 2024.

Victorian State School Spectacular 2024

Congratulations to Zoe Brown for being selected as a principal dancer for the Victorian State School Spectacular 2024!

This will be the second year in a row that Zoe has auditioned and made it into the role.

We are so thrilled to see her perform in this fantastic event later this year.

Zoe is also a Year 11 student completing Year 12 Dance this year. Her dedication and passion for Dance is evident in her dance classes too.

All the best Zoe, you are a star!

Year 12 First Aid Course

Recently our Year 12 VM class completed a First Aid course. First aid training is a necessary part of life as it provides us with knowledge and skills to give basic life support and other emergency care. It also helps in developing awareness that promotes safety and precaution. Our course covered the following topics:

  • Basic wound care
  • Bandaging techniques
  • Fracture stabilisation
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Asthma
  • Choking
  • Heart Attacks & Cardiac Arrest
  • Strokes
  • Anaphylaxis

By completing First Aid training students become valuable assets in their communities, workplaces, and homes, as they can offer immediate assistance in times of crisis; potentially saving lives and reducing the severity of injuries until professional medical help arrives. Hopefully, our students never have to apply these skills, but if they do, they will be confident in their ability to respond to the situation.

Year 7 Sustainable Cities Project

We are excited to share the fantastic work of our Year 7 Humanities students for their Sustainable Cities Project, as part of their geography unit.

This project involved students collaborating in groups of five to design and plan their own liveable city based on the concepts and strategies learnt in class.

They used recycled materials from around the school and their homes to create their dioramas, focusing on the liveability factors that make cities a good place to live for different demographics.

It was amazing to see the creativity of the students, with some groups including sustainable energy systems, efficient public transport networks, shopping districts, multi-purpose sporting stadiums, and expansive green spaces.
