Principal's Report

As we approach the end of the school year our current Year 11 students have completed Year 12 Orientation and are well underway to gaining an appreciation of the work required during their final year of Secondary School. Similarly, our current Year 10 cohort spent their final three days of this school year in Year 11 orientation classes. The step up to VCE is significant and it is vitally important that all students use their time effectively during the summer break to complete the work set by teachers and in particular, read ALL the prescribed novels.

I would like to take a moment and congratulate our newly appointed School Captains for 2023, Madelynne Lyons and Zahlia Meroka. They will be well supported by our Vice Captains in, Rusira Tharinda Danwatta Liyanage, Koray Yasar and David Jankulovski. I also want to congratulate our international student leader in Fan xi (Oscar) Tay.

Last week Year 9 students completed their exams. This is a great opportunity to experience exam style pressure and I encourage students to use these opportunities to ‘train’ for the real exams in a few years’ time.

Soon ALL students will receive their subject confirmations and booklists for 2023. This is the perfect opportunity to encourage your children to read their novels in preparation for next year. The benefits of reading are significant, and it is never too late to find a book that is of interest to your child. Encourage them to read every day and model the behaviour. Have books in your home, go to the local library together, speak to our knowledgeable librarians about what type of book might be of interest to your child and utilise our wonderful resource, which is superbly stocked with a great range of fiction and non-fiction material.

On Tuesday 22nd November, our teachers used the afternoon presenting and sharing the learning from their Professional Learning Communities (PLC). It was a great celebration afternoon. Teachers have been working in these teams since Term 3 and have used this time to develop, discuss and enhance their pedagogy and teaching capacity. I would like to take this moment to acknowledge all our staff for the commitment and tremendous effort they have invested understanding and learning during this process. The benefits of these professional interactions flow through to our students allowing them to become better learners.

I take this opportunity to remind all parents to take the time to thank our staff for their work and acknowledge the difficult task that they do every day. This year has been a very challenging year for students, staff, and society, and as we approach the last few weeks of this school year and remind our families of our school values of Respect, Initiative and Learning (RIL). These are our college values and pertain to all members of our community, our students, staff, and parents. The behaviours expected and linked to these values have been provided below for your perusal. I ask that you take the time to discuss these values with your children. We look forward to continuing to work as partners in raising well rounded students, who are respectful, think critically, show initiative, and take responsibility for their learning and actions.

Year 10 Systems Technology & Year 11 Systems Engineering Visit to Quantum Victoria

On Monday 24th October 2022 a group of Year 10 & 11 students visited Quantum Victoria in Macleod.

Quantum provides state of the art STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics) training for primary and secondary students. The objective of our visit was to give our students training and exposure to Fusion 360 – a three-dimensional Computer Aided Design (CAD) Package which we are evaluating for use in our technology subjects.

The benefits to our students from learning and becoming confident with the CAD package is that students will be able to design and manufacture projects using 3D printers and other computer-controlled hardware (milling machines & laser printers etc). Additionally, the software is used extensively in industry and further studies (Uni & TAFE), enabling our students to develop industry relevant skills.

The students engaged well with the trainers as well as developing an understanding of how the software worked. They confidently developed their designs and printed them on the 3D printers. As well as developing Fusion 360 skills, students also gained an appreciation for other software packages and trends in design packages as well as industry trends.

The visit was a great success with students acknowledging the value and benefits of the training. The next steps are to begin to integrate the training into our technology courses.

Finally, whilst the students represented the school well and were interactive and quite well behaved, I think an ‘equal highlight’ for the day was stopping at KFC on the way home!

Many thanks to Leesa Wilson (Technology Leader) and the great Administration team (Maree Kelly & Jacinta Catoggio) for making the excursion a great success.

Year 12 Graduation

Congratulations to the Class of 2022. We would especially like to congratulate you on your excellent behaviour in the final week of Year 12. Your level of maturity, respect and consideration for others is certainly what we here at Rosehill Secondary College are thoroughly proud of. We take this opportunity to thank you all for the contributions you have made to our College.

What a year it has been. Not just this year but basically your final few years of secondary education. Unexpected, unprecedented, unrelenting, unusual, and uncertain. We have certainly proven that we can deal with change and adversity, and you will go down in Victorian educational history. You’ll be able to tell your children and grandchildren that you completed Years 10 and 11 remotely and that this experience has provided you now with a set of skills which will assist you all in the future.

The Class of 2022 has had to face so many challenges and deal with constant insecurity and change. We cannot constantly focus on the negative aspects of disruptive academic years. Instead, we should all focus on how the COVID pandemic brought us a set of skills and techniques that no other year level in Victorian history has gained. You will enter the world, life beyond the walls of Rosehill Secondary College with greater resilience and flexibility. You will have the strength and tenacity to move forward and cope when life presents difficult challenges. The last three years have taught you to not run away when life and situations become challenging. Instead, we have learnt to conquer, solve, and achieve the results we desire. We are so very proud of each student this year. It was great to see you every day and be a part of your lives.

We would like to thank all families. It has been a pleasure working with you. Academic success is strengthened when the partnership between home and school is strong. We know that we have developed great working relationships with our families at Year 12 this year and we thank you all for your patience and collaboration.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank every Year 12 teacher. Every teacher has worked above and beyond to ensure your academic success. A huge thanks also to Mr Wallace, Ms Zivcic and Ms McKay.

We wish Kerry McKay all the best in retirement. She has given so much to the College over the years and the Class of 2022 have been so fortunate to have had her working with them. I personally would like to thank Kerry as I have learnt so much from such an experienced educator. A huge thanks to our whole Principal Class for being there for the Class of 2022.

Also thank you to Ms Zivcic who has been such a reliable assistant coordinator. We have made a great team. A huge thank you to the Rosehill Administration staff. In particular, Maree Kelly and Levena Hayes who have supported me a great deal in organising the Graduation event. We would also like to thank Anna Beswick and Rachel De La Paz for their AV assistance on the night.

To the Class of 2022

We wish you a successful, productive, healthy, and fruitful life. You all deserve only the best - so always aim high and never forget that we helped shape who you are and who you will thrive to be in the future.

All the very best and thanks for being a great cohort.

I will truly miss you!
