Interim reports are due this week, giving parents/carers a great opportunity to engage with their children on progress to this point in Term 3. In a couple of weeks Year 7 – 11 parent teacher student conferences will be held both onsite and remotely. We will use a similar model to Semester 1 and parents/carers will have an opportunity to book interviews with teachers in the coming weeks. Please keep a lookout for communication via COMPASS.

Course selection for 2023 has been completed for students in Year 9, 10 and 11. Year 7 and 8 students will need to complete and submit their forms in the coming week. Please ensure subjects are selected within the designated timeframe provided.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic work by Will Stubbings as Acting Assistant Principal during the first five weeks of this term, especially in organising and delivering the course selection process.

I would also like to congratulate Frances Snow who did a terrific job as Acting Principal in my absence.

The work of teachers, education support staff and principal class is significantly more challenging than ever before. The shortage of staff across the sector is real and we have not been immune. Please take a moment to thank our staff for their wonderful work, resilience and commitment to our community and our students.

Please note that the GAT is scheduled for Wednesday 7^th September, at school in the ECA.

Finally, I would like to remind one and all of the benefits of reading. Please encourage your child to read every day. I was fortunate enough to read a couple of books during my leave and am currently reading Should We Fall to Ruin by Harrison Christian, a true story based in New Guinea during WWII, a story worth telling.

All current Year 9, 10 and 11 students have now had the opportunity to complete their subject preferences for the 2023 school year.

Thank you to our wonderful careers team, level coordinators, learning area leaders and teaching staff who volunteered their time for the recent course counselling interviews with students and families. I trust that our young people and parents/guardians found the process valuable.

For many students the process of selecting suitable subjects became quite clear once the preparatory work around personal strengths and interests and research into future courses was complete. For some students it was time to think carefully about the subjects they wanted to do and the subjects their teachers recommended them to do. We strongly counsel students and families to take note of recommendations and to carry through with tangible actions if seeking to ‘upgrade’ a subject to a level higher than that recommended.

As a beginning, right now students should commit to attending our Afterschool Tuition Program and our Mathematics and Science Tuition Program which run every Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. In addition, students should be speaking and working with their teachers to build the requisite content knowledge and skills needed for the subject. Without these actions this year, success next year will be harder to achieve.

Finally, our current Year 7 and 8 students have now received their 2023 course planning forms and online subject selection login codes. I remind families to ensure this process is completed by Thursday 25^th August.

Our Year 11 and Year 12 VCAL classes participated in a day’s incursion on First Aid.

The Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course provided students with the knowledge and skills required to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies. Whether it is for your job, sports centre, school or volunteer work, current CPR training helps save lives. The workshop provided students with the theory and practical training and assessment covering the following topics:

• How to properly assess an emergency situation
• CPR techniques on adults and infants
• Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• First aid procedures for bleeding, burns and factures
• Managing anaphylaxis, asthma, seizures, snake bites and poisons
• Infection control procedures
• Treatment of shock
• Managing severe bleeding
• Legal responsibilities of a first aider

Our students found the course to be a valuable experience. Hopefully, if the situation arose and they have to provide CPR assistance, they will know what to do.

The 2022 Rosehill Secondary College Dance Concert and VCE Dance Showcase

'Fly Us to the Moon' is the semester 2 Dance Concert that will showcase the fantastic work of the Years 8, 10, 11 and 12 Dance classes. The very talented VCE Dance students will also perform their own-choreographed solos to an audience as part of their VCE Units 1-4 assessments.

Tuning into Teens is a free parenting program run by MacKillop Family Services that supports parents to build strong relationships with their teenagers. As a parent of now older children, I know full well the challenges (and rewards) of raising teenagers at the best of times, so I commend any service that can provide strategies, advice and reassurance to parents, particularly given our experiences over the last two and a half years of lockdowns, remote learning and other concerns. Attached to this newsletter is information about their next program, which is specifically designed for Pasifika Parents. The program runs from 14^th October until 18^th November.
