Principal's Report

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

Congratulations to all students on their efforts this year. We are so pleased to have been able to run classes onsite and provide all the extra curricula activities that create lifelong memories for our students. The opportunity to reconnect and begin the process of establishing the routines and habits that make Rosehill a great school has been vitally important. This will continue to be a strong focus for 2023 as unfortunately, there is no quick fix to the impact of lockdowns, for some students and families.

I take this opportunity to congratulate our Year 12 cohort who received their results on Monday. Well done to the class of 2022! Many students achieved exceptional VCE results with ATARs in the high nineties and over 25% of our students obtaining an ATAR of over 80. 99% of our cohort successfully completed their VCE or VCAL. The Careers team continue their terrific work in ensuring we have 100% of our students obtaining positive exit destination data.

On Monday night it was an honour to attend our Awards night which recognised and celebrated educational excellence at Rosehill. It was pleasing to see so many parents and families attend and celebrate the academic success of their children. A big congratulations to all students who received an award, well done! Their resilience, hard work and commitment to scholastic excellence is a testament to them, their family, and teachers. A very big thank you to Gladys Mora for the clockwork organisation, timing, and management of the Awards evening. Special mention to Brooke Gualtieri, Stephanie Wasif and instrumental music and performing arts staff for their support and performances during proceedings. I would also like to acknowledge all our special guests for their support and sponsorship.

To our staff who are moving on or retiring at the end of this year, we take a moment to wish them all the very best for the next chapter in their journey. Thank you for your contribution to Rosehill over the year(s).

I take this opportunity to acknowledge Kerry McKay – who has been at Rosehill Secondary College for almost 40 years and an Assistant Principal for the last 13. Her contribution to education has been exemplary and she has played a significant part in shaping young people, society, and future leaders during this time. It has been a privilege to work with Kerry and learn from her. She has always put students first and has worked tirelessly to help close the gap for students with additional needs. Kerry will be irreplaceable and missed by many students, parents, and staff.

I would like to acknowledge all the families who support our school through our subject contributions. By doing so, it not only significantly reduces the cost of the booklist to parents but allows the school to provide many positive experiences for our children and our community. Without this ongoing support from our families, our capacity to continue to provide exceptional programs may be significantly impacted.

Finally, the summer break is a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends and to recharge for the year ahead. However, I’d like to request that all parents/guardians provide support and encouragement in ensuring all children read all their novels in preparation for 2023. Just like watching a good movie again and again, reading a novel multiple times has similar benefits and often we notice additional information possibly missed the first time.

As a parent, it is also a great idea to model good reading habits. The library staff at Rosehill have kindly recommended several good reads. I have selected American Dirt, by Jeanine Cummins, and look forward to immersing myself into this story.

Below is the list of the main novels for each year level and could be a great discussion point during a long drive to the beach this summer.

Year 7

  • Things a Map Won’t Show You - Susan La Marca and Pam Macintyre
  • A Single Stone - Meg McKinlay

Year 8

  • Runner - Robert Newton

Year 9

  • Ghost Bird - Lisa Fuller

Year 10

  • Town - James Roy
  • Insight Shakespeare Plays: Macbeth

Year 11

  • The Great Gatsby - F Scott Fitzgerald

Year 12

  • The Crucible - Arthur Miller

On behalf of all the staff at Rosehill Secondary College, we thank you for your support, well wishes and commitment to the College. We wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and happy 2023.

Kind Regards

Arthur Soumalias

Arts

Ms Sullivan and the Visual Arts Team would like to congratulate Alex Jacobson on being accepted into Top Designs 2023 for her Visual Communication Design work. Only 15 students are selected to exhibit from all entrants in Victoria. This is a huge achievement and really reflects the hard work and dedication Alex has shown throughout the year. We are incredibly proud of her!

Alex’s work will be on display at Melbourne Museum for VCAA’s Top Designs, Season of Excellence Exhibit from March 2023.

2022 has been a very successful year for Alex, last week she was awarded the Mayoral Award of Excellence in Design at the Incinerator Gallery's opening night.

On behalf of the Visual Arts Department and Rosehill Secondary College, we would like to congratulate Alex on a very successful year.

Sprout is a new restaurant aiming to utilise fresh, local produce through unpretentious, homely cooking. Alex has designed a collection of branding solutions and a recipe book cover that would showcase chef favourites for customers to recreate at home.

Mummify your Mate

To cap off our study of Ancient Egypt, the Year 7 students had terrific fun participating in the ‘Mummify your Mate’ activity.

Teams were formed and a student from each group volunteered to be the ‘mummy’. Some very creative team names were decided upon including Kuthankoray, Anhari and Shamun.

Students made masks fit for a Pharaoh and canopic jars for the internal organs. They wrote a story about the life of the Pharaoh and created the Book of the Dead with spells and rituals to guide and protect the dead in their passage to the afterlife.

The race was then well and truly on as each group carefully set about wrapping their mummy in the ‘finest linen’ (toilet paper!) for the afterlife. Lots of fun was had by all and our mummies were great sports as they lay on the ‘operating table’ throughout the process.

We want to congratulate all our Year 12 students on their results which were released earlier this week.

We are proud of the resilience and determination that you have shown over your whole high school education but especially the last few years.

In particular, we want to acknowledge and congratulate our high achievers, some of whom are pictured below, on their outstanding results.

The Rosehill community wishes you all the best for your future endeavours and we look forward to continuing to celebrate your successes.
