As we head into the King’s Birthday long weekend, I take this opportunity to remind families that next week is a truncated school week. We have a public holiday on Monday 10^th June and Friday 14^th June is Report Writing Day.

Exams and Work Experience

I can report that we have been exceptionally pleased with the exam period for our Year 9, 10 and 11 students. The Year 10s still have two more days of exams next week before heading off to work experience for the final two weeks of term. We wish them all the best and hope this experience provides an insight into possible future career pathways.

GAT

Students completing at least one Unit 3 and 4 subjects will sit the GAT on Tuesday 18^th June. Year 12 VCE classes will not run on this day. Students in Year 11 will prioritise the GAT over their Year 11 class for the day.

Building Works

There will be some defect rectification works in the auditorium next week. It will not be available during this time. In addition, disability ramp access works will commence in the area to the front of the canteen and leading into A wing. This will impact access to the canteen from A wing. The only access will be from the western side between B wing and portable rooms P3 and P4.

Cyber Safety – Susan McLean

Finally, I bring to your attention the wonderful opportunity to attend acclaimed cyber safety expert Susan Mclean. She will be providing valuable information and tips to parents on Tuesday 25^th June from 6:30pm. Please register your interest by contacting College Administration – 9337 2488. This is a student free event. Susan will present an age-appropriate session to our Year 7 and 8 students during the school day.

The following students have made it through to the Western Metropolitan region finals for Cross Country after competing last week.

This will be held on Thursday 20th June at Brimbank Park.

The Senior boys netball team won the division round robin, winning two games and drawing one. They will advance to the Western Metropolitan finals next term.

The students were fantastic all day, showed great sportsmanship and worked extremely well as a team.

Year 7 Boys AFL

This team was enthusiastic and did their best, despite two very strong teams in Strathmore and Buckley Park. This did not stop the team from working hard and making their coaches proud!

Year 7 Girls Netball

This fantastic group of girls did extremely well, winning all but one game. They played very well together and looked as though they’d been playing together for a long time. )

The year 8 boys and girls soccer teams had a wonderful day out last week. Both teams played some good soccer and made the final, however, narrowly missed out on advancing to the next round.

Thank you to the wonderful staff who coached these teams. We really couldn’t do this without you; Mr Derks, Mr Waugh, Miss McInerney, Ms Brook, Mr Rose, Miss Sutton and Charmaine.

Well done to all teams for representing the school showing our school values, you make Rosehill proud!

HEALTH/PE TEACHER

Recently our VM Year 11 students undertook a lifesaving First Aid course.

This course covered a range of topics, including:

• Basic wound care
• Bandaging techniques
• Fracture stabilisation
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
• Asthma
• Choking
• Heart Attacks & Cardiac Arrest
• Strokes
• Anaphylaxis

The course aims to equip our students with the appropriate skills and knowledge so that if the situation should arise, they would have the confidence to administer first aid to community members, family or in the workplace until further help arrives, potentially saving lives and reducing the severity of injuries.

This training is mandatory for a range of job roles and will set students up for employability in many areas such as Sports and Recreation, Childcare and Education, Trades, and Medical Industries.

By equipping students with first aid skills, we not only empower them to respond effectively in emergencies, but also, we foster a sense of responsibility that extends beyond the classroom.

Student Leadership in Action

Our student leaders are incredibly lucky to have the support of teachers who give their time and energy to supporting student voice and leadership at Rosehill. Part of the student leadership group’s role is to focus on a Community Project, and work with their assistant coordinators to raise awareness of issues that are important to them.

Year 8 – 10 student leadership groups continue to meet weekly or fortnightly with their assistant coordinators to discuss student issues, and to plan community events and fundraisers. In addition, student leaders regularly coordinate and present student assemblies.

The Year 7 leadership have begun their meetings to plan for their Community Leadership Project and are looking forward to building their connections and developing their student voice to represent their peers.

The Year 10 leadership group organized an amazing day for Harmony Day in March, the Year 7 Students have chosen National Day Against Bullying (16th August) as their community project, and the Year 8 leadership organized IDAHOBIT Day in May.

The Year 11 leadership group have been busy at work canvasing design ideas and student opinions for the all-important Year 12 student jumper, and are also planning to attend a session of the ABC’s Q & A.

The Year 12 leadership group meet regularly and have just begun the process of organising their yearbook. They recently facilitated the ATOSS surveys and are organising the GAT preparation day. The Year 11 and 12 leadership groups also took part in a student focus group to reflect on the Student Agency & Responsibility (SAR) Program, and to offer suggestions and student input for the session focus in Term 3.

April 25th: Evan McKenna-Burke represented Rosehill Secondary College by laying a wreath at the East Keilor RSL.

May 16th: Claudia Bradilovich led the school on IDAHOBIT pledge day by making a pledge to support our LGBTQI+ community, and to make Rosehill a safe, welcoming and inclusive place for all students.

National Reconciliation Week marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Students were also encouraged to reflect on the meaning of National Sorry Day, officially the National Day of Healing. This event is held annually to commemorate the Stolen Generations, and is part of the ongoing efforts towards reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

RIL (Respect, Learning, Initiative) School Values celebrated at Rosehill

At Rosehill our students learn about our school values from the first time they walk into our school until they leave. At the beginning of the year, students have induction sessions where they learn about, or are reminded of, our core values. Our Year 7 students are lucky to have peer support sessions in Term 1 through the Peer Support Program in which older students guide the younger students in the expectations and values of our school. These expectations and core values are supported through our SWPBS (School Wide Positive Behaviour Support) model which develops positive, safe, supportive learning cultures.

Recent data obtained through our student PIVOT surveys showed that one of the highest criteria for celebration was from students saying, ‘I know how I am supposed to behave in this classroom’. This excellent result reflects the consistent practices of staff to foster a consistent approach to creating a positive learning environment, as well as the recent, and ongoing, professional development undertaken by all staff in the Berry Street Education Model of supporting student learning.

So how can we tell our students are demonstrating our school values? Just ask Gladys, our RIL shop coordinator, who runs the ever-popular RIL shop, ably supported by student leaders!!!

On Tuesday 4th June, Gladys organized a RIL Special Food Event – and it was a massive success – below is Gladys’ report:

What a Food Day event!

It was great to see so many Year 12 students exchanging stacks of cards, and such joy when they walked out with handfuls of treats.

There were over 500 items that were wiped out from the event, and a total of 1,416 RIL cards were exchanged for food items.

Students kept asking when the next Food Day was going to happen!

A big thank you to the following students who volunteered at the RIL Shop, without them the event would not be possible.

IDAHOBIT – Year 8 Community Leadership Project

May 17th: Rosehill proudly flying the rainbow flag.

A very successful IDAHOBIT was celebrated, raising funds for Minus18. Minus 18 is a charity whose mission is to create an Australia free from discrimination for all LGBTQIA+ youth. Unfortunately, our LGBTQIA+ youth still experience disproportionate rates of bullying, harassment, and discrimination, and as a community at Rosehill we are committed to a safe and inclusive environment which is always guided by our core value of respect.

The Year 8s hosted a sausage sizzle in the area just outside C3, and a group of Ms. Riquelme’s Year 8 food technology students had made cupcakes which were a huge hit. We even ran out of sausages in spite of the whole Year 7 cohort being at the zoo. It was a great success!

The Year 8 leaders should be congratulated for their amazing work in planning and facilitating this very important event to raise awareness about discrimination and to celebrate our inclusive community at Rosehill.

A big shout out to the amazing Year 10 student leaders who showed initiative by being proactive in offering their assistance and guidance to their younger peer leaders. Well done Year 10 leaders 😊
