Principal's Report

Parent Teacher Conferences

As we approach the last few weeks of Term, Parent Teacher interviews will be held on Thursday 21st March. We run this in two parts:

  • Session 1 – 11:00am – 4:00pm will be held onsite face to face in various locations - Library, Year 11 Centre, and Year 12 VCE Centre.
  • Session 2 – 5:00pm – 7:00pm will be virtual meetings held online.

I also recommended perusing your child’s interim report prior to attending as a good starting point for conversations. We also strongly recommend that students attend with parents where possible. A Compass post explaining how to book has already been sent.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing commenced this week for students in Year 7 and 9. All NAPLAN testing is online, and our IT team and staff have been working with students to ensure individual devices are properly set up to enable access to the testing. This is a significant task and requires a massive effort from our staff and IT team. Thank you to all involved in making this happen.

OH&S Drills

To meet our OH&S requirements and remain compliant, last week we completed a lockdown drill. It is pleasing to report that it ran successfully and has provided useful feedback to further enhance our systems and processes.

Swimming Carnival

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend this year’s swimming carnival but by all reports the whole school event was a great success - it is very pleasing to have the entire school at one event. I would like to acknowledge Ms Giannino who did a tremendous job in organising and coordinating the day and the planning in the lead up to the day.

Building Update

We have finally obtained access to the new auditorium. We are very excited about using this space and Ms Mortellaro was thrilled to be teaching her dance classes on our new sprung dance floor. We look forward to hosting many events and performing art shows now and well into the future.

Respect, Initiative, Learning

Finally, I have included the College RIL matrix for your perusal. This is an important document for our college, and we encourage all members of our school community; students, staff, and parents to be familiar with these behaviours and values.

Year 12 Camp

We are excited to share the highlights of the Year 12 Camp, an unforgettable experience that brought our students together for camaraderie, adventure, and personal growth.

Approximately 120 of our Year 12 students travelled to Philip Island’s CYC Adventure Resort where they engaged in team-building activities, pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and supporting their peers. Students also had the opportunity to attend offsite excursions to the Penguin Parade, Phillip Island Chocolate Factory, Clip’n’Climb rock climbing, Island Surf School surf lessons at Smith’s beach and Amaze’n’Things visual illusions, outdoor maze, and mini golf. Furthermore, a significant highlight of the camp was the camp trivia, organised by our College Captains. This was followed by a pyjama disco and fierce competitions of Mario Kart and Uno.

We are extremely proud of the Year 12 cohort and the way they conducted themselves during this camp, demonstrating respect and kindness not only to each other, but with the staff that they interacted with at the various venues they attended. The staff at the Adventure Resort, as well as staff from the Surf School, Clip’n’Climb and Amaze’n’Things, all commented on how well behaved and respectful our students were and the student feedback overall was extremely positive.

The camp will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on our Year 12 students as they embark on their final academic year. We extend our gratitude to the dedicated staff and organisers who made this enriching experience possible for our Year 12's.

Art

This semester Year 10 Art students will be exploring many different mediums in the lead up to creating an artist book.

They have started this process with monoprinting which is a way to create a one-off print that features textured and hazy backgrounds and surprising results.

Their work is centred around their personal interests.

VCS VM White Card Training

Recently our Year 11 VM class participated in White Card training. This training is designed to provide workers with the knowledge and skills necessary to work safely on construction sites. The topics covered included:

  • Hazards and risk assessments
  • Report incidents of safety breaches and workplace accidents
  • Safe workplace behaviour and conduct
  • Safe work method: job safety analysis, acts, regulations, codes of practice, and industry standards.
  • WorkSafe inspectors’ powers
  • Employers’ and employees’ responsibilities
  • Health and safety committees
  • Health and safety reporting processes
  • OHS incidents and emergency response procedures.

Our trainer Josh engaged our students with puzzles, role play, physical demonstrations, quizzes, and theory. Overall, it was a worthwhile program and hopefully these qualifications will help our students in their future jobs.

Medieval Incursion

Our Year 8 Humanities cohort participated in an educational, entertaining, but most importantly a fun day exploring Medieval society. It was a fantastic opportunity for a hands-on learning experience. The students took part in three program activities:

  • Costumes
    • Music and Dance
    • Arms and Armour

Our students enjoyed modelling a range of costumes from peasants to nobles the differentiation of both classes was evident in colour and fabric. Our library came alive as the fashion parade began! Next, they were taught a fun, but simple medieval dance as they experienced the sound of medieval instruments. Finally, our cohort all got out of their seats to wear a variety of different types of armour and helmets. Our presenters discussed the use of weapons and gave our eager students the opportunity to go to “battle.”

Overall, the incursion was worthwhile, informative, and engaging for our students giving them an appreciation of Medieval life.

    Rosefest

As part of the Year 9 program at Rosehill Secondary College, students participate in an Interdisciplinary Studies subject.

This term students have been investigating the concept of ’My Community’. As part of their assessment, the students will organise a gold coin donation for the out of uniform, food drives, food and activity stalls (our College carnival) which will be held on Monday 25th March at lunchtime.

We will also have live entertainment from the Music Department.

The proceeds from this event will be donated to Foodbank Victoria, The Salvation Army and Yooralla Victoria.

We would greatly appreciate your support by donating goods to the college by Wednesday 17th April. The following is a guide in what you can donate to Foodbank Victoria:
