Principal's Report

Year 12

We are at the midpoint of Term 3 and for our Year 12 cohort it is their last full term of Secondary School. It’s an exciting but also stressful time so we encourage our families to spend some time talking with their children about the current pressures they are feeling and providing the right space and time for optimal study. Please refer to the two articles by Andrew Fuller – Clinical Psychologist in this edition of the newsletter on Motivation and Building Confidence.

Course Counselling

Course counselling sessions for Year 12, 11 and 10, for 2025 have been completed this week. If your child was absent or unable to make their booking, please inform the relevant Year Level Coordinator as soon as possible to ensure they have a say in the subjects they choose for next year.

Current Year 7 and 8 students will complete their subject selection this coming week. Please keep a look out for a Compass post with details. Webcodes and instructions will be distributed to students directly.

Art Off the Page Production

In Week 3 we had a performing arts production called, Art Off the Page. I was lucky enough to attend on the final night and was very impressed with not only the concept, but the cohesion and wonderful skills and talents demonstrated by our students. Well done to Melissa Bonnett and all involved in organising and supporting this event in our new auditorium.

Athletics Day

Earlier this term we also had our annual Athletics Day carnival. Although the day started overcast it soon cleared into a beautiful Winter’s Day. It was terrific to see so many students participating, in true Olympic spirit. Congratulations to Ms Giannino, our Sports coordinator, for her tremendous coordinating and organising skills and all the staff that helped make this a successful day.

Interim Reports

Term 3 interim reports are now available for parents and students to access. This is a great snapshot of progress this term and the GPA provides some valuable overall insight. You can track your child’s GPA improvement from previous reports and discuss with your child their reflections of their progress over the year and what they can do to continue to improve each cycle. The reference to Andrew Fuller’s articles above will also be of benefit here.

Parent/Carer Opinion Survey

Last week many parents would have received an email to compete the parent opinion survey from a company called Orima. Your feedback is important to us so if you could spare 10-15 minutes completing the survey it is greatly appreciated.

Berry Street Education Model

On Tuesday 13th August, the college had Day 3 of the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) training. The focus of this day covered the Domains, Stamina and Engagement. The key themes under the Stamina domain were Growth Mindset, Emotional Intelligence, Resilience and Stamina Tools.

Under Engagement, the focus was on Flow, Willingness/Motivation, Positive Emotions and Positive Priming.

Various leadership teams will unpack the information over the coming weeks, and we will decide which elements we plan to implement as whole school strategies going forward.

The fourth and final training day of our BSEM journey will be next term on Thursday 21st November.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Visit

Today, Friday 16th August, we had the privilege of welcoming The Hon. Ben Carroll, Deputy Premier and The Minster for Education to the college. He was here to celebrate Science Week and to visit our new Performing Arts Centre, the Auditorium and STEM building.

The students were able to demonstrate the use of our laser cutter and 3D printers.

Whilst in the science rooms the Minister for Medical Research was able to see a Year 8 science class in action, dissecting a heart.

The Deputy Premier was then able to take a virtual reality experience in our VR room.

We thank our local member for Niddrie, The Hon. Ben Carroll, Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Minister for Medical Research, for his support of public education, and our college, over many, many years.

Retirement

Finally, I take this opportunity to farewell and thank Mr David Copping for 34 years of public education at Rosehill. David commenced at the school in 1990 and has taught science and media throughout his journey. His contribution to our annual school magazine has been extraordinary and its annual publication is often a key bookmark for each year. We wish David all the best in his future endeavours.
