Principal's Report

Term 3

Welcome back. I trust that students and staff had some time to relax and reflect on their efforts for the year. I look forward to a similar consistent and hardworking effort for Semester 2. To students who performed well, keep up the great work and effort, to our students who may have been somewhat disappointed with their efforts and results, use this opportunity to make changes over the next two terms. I encourage students to avail themselves of our afterschool homework programs, if required.

Term 3 is a significant time for planning, and this is when we commence the process of looking toward 2024. Of most importance in the coming weeks is our subject selection process. Mr Connors, Ms Snow and the course selection team have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare. Please take the time to attend the virtual information sessions in the coming weeks. Important dates and times will be posted on compass.

Period 2:

10:am – 11:00am

Break

Period 3:

Period 4:

Japanese Sister School Visit

We are excited to welcome our very special guests from our Japanese sister school, Kogakkan High on Wednesday 26th July. We have lots of great activities planned. Thank you to all the families who are hosting and supporting such a wonderful program - it would not be possible without the support of the school community.

Kogakkan High School is a Shinto School and part of the Shinto University in Ise, Japan. Shinto is a very traditional religion in Japan and is seen as a very prestigious and important part of Japanese culture. It is a great opportunity for our students to be exposed to a different culture and experience new and different ways of thinking and working.

Work Experience

Year 10 students are back after a month away from school due to the term break and two weeks of work experience. Ms Vossos and Ms Susnjara did a terrific job in completing paperwork, helping source placements, and coordinating the program for almost 200 students. Many schools have reduced work experience in recent times but we at Rosehill believe the experience is invaluable and provides a taste of the workforce and possibilities for future pathways. We believe this is terrific preparation for such discussions, especially in the lead up to course counselling and subject selection sessions for VCE over the next few weeks.

School Musical

Our musical performance Elvis Reimagined is almost upon us. This runs over two nights on Tuesday 1st August and Wednesday 2nd August at the East Keilor RSL. Tickets are available from Try Booking.

NAPLAN

Individual results will be mailed home in the coming days. Please take the time to read the documentation provided, with the results, as there is a new way of measuring student performance. The six numerical bands have been reduced to four new proficiency standards.

The NAPLAN proficiency standards include four proficiency levels for each assessment area at each year level:

  • Exceeding: the student's result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
  • Strong: the student's result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
  • Developing: the student's result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
  • Needs additional support: the student's result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.

Staffing

Finally, I would like to welcome several new staff who have commenced this term. Despite the significant teacher and staff shortage across the system, we have been very fortunate to be able to attract a broad range of staff with various degrees of experience and highly sought-after qualifications.

We warmly welcome:

Katelyn McInerney - Health and Physical Education with significant VCE and VET experience.

Ator Gorgis – English and Humanities Faculties.

Rachel Cerchiara – Mathematics and Science faculties.

Holly Beasley – is an experienced educator and will be leading our Disability and Inclusion work.

Lou Huynh – Specialist Technician - part of the Technical Support to Schools Program.

Year 7 Visual Communication Design

Last semester the Year 7 Visual Communication Design class had a wonderful time learning the one-point-perspective drawing technique. Following lessons of tutorials, they selected a typeface and created 3D letters that they would later apply to white t-shirts.

Year 12 Japanese

During the holidays, Year 12 students of Japanese participated in a one-day exam preparation workshop organised by four schools at the Library at The Dock.

Students learnt written exam tips for comprehension tasks, how to prepare for the extended writing task and did some oral exam preparation. By participating in these activities, students had an opportunity to share their opinions and ask questions. They now have a better understanding what is required for the external Japanese exams and how to prepare for them.

They also had lunch at Dohtonbori, an okonomiyaki restaurant, at the Docklands. Here they delighted in Japanese cuisine and had opportunities to talk with Year 12 students learning Japanese from other schools, which was an enjoyable experience.

I would like to thank Ms Fijita and teachers from Nossal High School, Strathmore Secondary College and Mentone Grammar school for their support and participation in this workshop.

Trip to Japan Program

Trip to Japan Program for Years 9, 10 and 11 Students in 2024

Would you like your child to experience the beauty of the Japanese culture? How about joining us on the 2024 Trip to Japan? All students are welcome regardless of the language they are studying at the school.

Highlights of the trip will include a visit to Tokyo Disneyland, beautiful historical places in Kyoto and the peace park museum in Hiroshima. We will also visit Kogakkan High School, our sister school in Mie prefecture, and stay with their families. The last trip was extremely successful and those students who have taken part in this program have found it to be one of their most rewarding experiences.

The trip to Japan will take place from 14th to 27th September 2024. We intend to depart a week before the Term 3 break and return during the break.

Community News

We’re planning for our next Disability Action Plan January 2024 – December 2025 and want your feedback!

Our current Disability Action Plan 2014-2023 finishes up late this year. So far we have had community conversations with the Disability Advisory Committee, Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung Elders and relevant industry stakeholders, and now we want to hear from you.

We want to hear from you about current barriers, challenges and opportunities. Let us know what an improved future in Moonee Valley for people with a disability and their Carers would look like to you.

The feedback you provide will help us to develop the next Disability Action Plan for 2024-2025. Once we have developed a draft Plan we will come back to community for feedback on that.

Have your say by Friday 28 July, 2023. The YourSay survey should take around 5 minutes to complete. To access the survey in other formats, please contact our Access and Inclusion Officer, Kelly Armstrong on 9243 8888 or email yoursay@mvcc.vic.gov.au.
