Principal's Report

As we approach the end of the second week of lockdown, I would like to thank you for your resilience, support and commitment to your children. This is clearly not an ideal situation and just like you, I hope that we have all children back at school very soon. We are providing on-site support for a small number of children each day and this is available primarily to vulnerable students, or families of essential/authorised workers. However, if you feel your child is not engaging with the on-line work, please speak to the relevant year level coordinator to see how we can support.

The College will continue to provide relevant communication via Compass and we will try to communicate as soon as we can. Often the advice we receive from DET is late in the afternoon, therefore our communication will follow in due course.

It was pleasing to see the Year 11 and 12 students back on Friday, and I remind all students, parents and visitors that during this current climate masks are compulsory and must be worn at all times. Social distancing is once again required for staff and strongly encouraged by all students. Only necessary visitors are permitted at the school, so unless you have an appointment, please refrain from coming onto the school grounds. Remember if unwell, stay home.

Year 11 exams will continue this week with changes available on Compass. Year 10 exams will be scheduled for the week of 14th June but only if work experience is cancelled or delayed. We are committed to try and run the work experience but this decision will be determined by factors out of our control. Year 9 exams are also likely to proceed during the same week.

The GAT for students completing a 3/4 Unit has been postponed and will not run as initially scheduled for Wednesday, 9th June. It is my understanding that a new date for early Term 3 is most likely.

The pupil free day (Report Writing Day) scheduled for Friday, 11th June has also been postponed and will now take place on Monday, 21st June 2021.

During this blended approach of teaching, we will have some teachers working from school (if they teach Year 11 or Year 12) and most who must continue to work from home as per the advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer. The school office will be open and partially staffed each day.

In positive news, just prior to the current lockdown, the Year 8 camp was able to proceed. By all reports from staff and students, the camp was a great success. The Year 8 students had a great time and conducted themselves well. We thank the staff at the camp site - Lady Northcote, our Rosehill staff and families for making this camp a reality for our children this year.


Education and Training Reform Amendment (Protection of School Communities) Bill 2021

This information is for parents, carers and guardians about the new Education and Training Reform Amendment (Protection of School Communities) Bill 2021.

Victorian school communities are overwhelmingly positive and safe places for teaching and learning where we all play a role in supporting students in their achievements, engagement and wellbeing needs.

It is likely that you have heard the recent media announcements that the Victorian Government has introduced the Education and Training Reform Amendment (Protection of School Communities) Bill 2021. If passed through parliament, the proposed Bill would come into effect in May 2022.

The Bill aims to protect and keep school communities safe by preventing and deterring violent and aggressive behaviours from adult members of the school community and ensure that schools are positive, safe and inclusive places to work and learn. This Bill will apply to the small minority of adult members of the Victorian school community who engage in this behaviour, after early conflict resolution measures through non-legislative avenues have failed.

The proposed law will empower principals and other authorised persons to issue School Community Safety Orders in response to parents, carers and other adult members of the school community who engage in harmful, threatening, abusive or disruptive behaviours on school grounds or places where school activities take place, or inappropriate and harmful communication through emails and social media.

This Bill will apply to the small minority of the school community who engage in this behaviour when all other reasonable interventions have failed. The changes would ensure that all members of the school community are kept safe and to minimise any harm to their safety and wellbeing. There will be internal and external review mechanisms in place if a person who is subject to a School Community Safety Order wishes to appeal an Order.

Arrangements will be available to ensure parents can still remain engaged in their child’s learning to and to minimise any disruption to the student.

This Bill would not replace the existing avenues to raise any complaints, issues or suggestions with schools. [Schools may wish to insert link to their Complaints or Parent dispute policies, or Schools’ Statement of Values]. By continuing to engage with these communication channels in a respectful and collaborative manner, we can continue to work together to support our students

VCAL Presentation: Digital Thumbprint

We recently welcomed Digital Thumbprint to deliver their workshops to our VCAL Year 11 students. Our facilitator Dom, delivered a program which was fun and engaging. The interactive workshops were designed to empower and inform students about the advantages of having a positive online presence and arm them with the vital information they need to stay safe online.

Students were encouraged to always think before posting or sharing personal information online. Nowadays, everyone can google, including employers checking social media channels to screen potential new employees and their suitability for a job. This is when your digital history may catch up with you!! Your online ghost can come back to haunt you: especially if employers happen across something that reflects poorly on your character and conduct. Will employers really enter your name into Google or Facebook and see what they can dredge up? The short answer is yes! A survey in 2017 found that 70% of employers regularly screened prospective employees using social media. Moreover, some 53% of them had disqualified candidates based on publicly accessible social media content including ‘provocative or inappropriate photographs, videos or information’ (39%), evidence of drinking or drug use (38%), discriminatory comments (32%), and evidence that the candidate had lied about their qualifications (27%). About 17% had even ruled out a candidate for ‘posting too frequently’.

That Facebook photo of you draped across a bar late at night, showing how much of a good time you were having, could be why your latest job application gets no further than the bin.

Dom gave many practical examples of online postings that had a negative impact. Students were encouraged to be mindful of the information they share with the “world”. Dom suggested that they regularly Google themselves, check privacy settings and avoid posting anything they’d rather the world didn’t see. That way they will be secure in the knowledge that employers won’t see anything embarrassing or difficult to explain.

Overall, the presentation proved to be a highly beneficial experience for our students. Hopefully, they will be responsible and proactive members of our online community.

VCE Japanese

Voice Projection Workshop for VCE Japanese students

On 11th May, Mrs. Yoko Henderson, a teacher of music and Japanese and a music director of Yukari Echo (a Japanese women’s choir group), came to our Japanese VCE class to present a voice projection skills workshop. Year 12 language students need to speak with a very clear voice in their oral examination in October. Yoko introduced our students to the concept of voice, the importance of posture and some exercises to improve their voice projection skills. She also taught Japanese activities for voice projection training. The students who participated in this workshop included Kumali Karunaratne, Modan Lu, Liam Roberts, Declan Weston, Ojas Bhardwaj, Mitchell Frasca, Jenny Ho, Mark Jiang, Daniel La, Tyler La and Joey Teoh. All students enjoyed a unique workshop in Japanese. I would like to thank Mrs Henderson for her presentation.

Thursday 17th June:
Students will be required to come to the ECA during certain lessons to rehearse. Students will be informed of the particular lesson/s in which they are needed. Dismissal will be at the normal time of 3:15pm


Holiday Rehearsals

Monday 28th June AND Tuesday 29th June:
All students are required for the entire day at school. Students will meet in the ECA and will be involved in compulsory rehearsals. Students need to be at school by 9:00am and will be dismissed at the normal time of 3:15pm.

Friday 9th July:
Dress Rehearsal - All students will be required in the ECA from 9:00am and will be dismissed at 3:15pm. They need to bring all costumes and props and have their make-up and hair done before they get to school.

Note: as the Canteen will not be open during the holidays, students must bring their own snacks, food and drink. School buses will not be running.


Show Week
The venue for all rehearsals and performance is: The Meat Market - 3 Blackwood Street North Melbourne.

Monday 12th July - Bump in and Sound Check: 12:00pm – 4:00pm
Main cast and band ONLY are needed at the venue.
Students will be taken from Rosehill Secondary College to the venue in the school bus. They are to make their own way home from the venue.

Tuesday 13th July - Dress and Tech Rehearsals: 9:00am - 4:00pm
All students are required to make their own way to The Meat Market
Students should arrive at the venue with hair and make-up done. Bring your costumes and any props. Students will be involved in rehearsals all day. They must bring their own lunch, snacks and drinks for the day. They will be dismissed from the venue.

Wednesday 14th July:
Morning – 9:00am – 3.15pm
Arrive at the venue with hair and make-up done. Bring your costumes and any props. Students will be involved in rehearsals all day and a matinee performance beginning at 12.30pm – 3.15pm. They must bring their own lunch, snacks and drinks for the day. Students will be dismissed at 3.15pm to have a break and dinner before the evening show. Staff will be present to supervise students during the break, but parents are urged to attend between 3.15pm and 5.30pm to take their children for an off-site break.

Evening- 5.30pm – 9.00pm
Students need to return to the venue by 5.30pm to prepare for the evening performance at 7:00pm. The show will conclude at approximately 8.45pm. Students must be picked up from the venue.

The venue must be cleaned, costumes and props returned and the set packed up. Students will be dismissed when their dressing room is in order. Students must be picked-up from the venue by 9.45pm at the latest.

STEP Collaboration Session

On Wednesday 19th May, Year 7 and 8 STEP students collaborated to work on their STEP Digital Portfolio. The Year 8 students were wonderful mentors for the year 7s; guiding them through the importance of setting goals, reflecting on strengths and weaknesses and tracking progress.

The Digital Portfolio process requires students to create four goals they would like to work towards throughout the year, and in future. Students regularly reflect on these goals by reviewing school reports and other challenges and achievements. Students are then required to create a website which showcases their learning and growth. Students build on their portfolio each year throughout their STEP journey and it becomes a wonderful tool students can refer to when applying for a job in the future or perhaps a leadership position. At the end of the year, all STEP students present their website at a STEP celebration evening held at the College. Parents and staff are invited to this evening to celebrate the learning of our wonderful STEP cohort.

Keilor East Rotary - Writing Competition

Towards the end of 2020, the English KLA Leader, Sirocha Bruckard, entered a number of Year 7 students into the East Keilor Rotary Essay Competition. The competition asked students to reflect on what they'd learned during 2020, how the experience of living through a pandemic has changed them, and, in particular, how this unprecedented event can help us build a better world.

Students achieved wonderful results, including first prize (Jeremy Bromley - $600), second prize (Stephanie Perera Gunawardane - $300) and two highly commended awards (Isobel Robertson and Hamza Petro - both $50). They are to be congratulated on these results, not just for entering their work into the public domain but also because the age category included students in both Years 7 and 8. Students were presented with their prizes at an awards ceremony on Monday 24th May 2021.

Congratulations David Jankulovski’s 10E

David was selected by his soccer club (Brimbank Stallions FC, u16s NPL) to tryout for the Football Victoria TIDC (Talent Identification Development Centre).

Out of a few hundred elite players, David was selected into Block 1 in TIDC and was placed in the NorthWest team, where he trained every second Tuesday at Darebin International Sports Centre.

During the School holidays David played a few games vs other TIDC teams (Victorian Team, 2nd Victorian team, South team and East team) and did quite well. Then David was selected into Block 2 and also did well.

Recently we received great news via email that David was selected into Block 3 in TIDC. The TIDC teams were cut from 6 teams to 2 teams.

What that means is David continues to train with the Football Victorian coaches and will be in the 1st or 2nd Victorian Team.

If David is lucky enough to make the first team then he will represent Victoria in the coming Australian championships.

David has worked very hard to try and keeps his grades up while training soccer 4 to 5 days a week plus a game on Sundays.

Well done David!!
