Interim Reports

Term 3 interim reports are available on Compass. Please take the time to review these with your children and discuss their strengths and opportunities for improvement. If things are going well continue to do what you’re doing, if not, then what changes can you make at home to better support their learning? For instance, do you have a quiet study area? Do you have set routines for homework and quiet reading? Do you manage their time online? What is the sleep routine like?

A reminder that parent teacher interviews for students in Years 7 – 10 are coming up on Thursday 7^th September. Booking details will be sent via Compass in the coming weeks. It’s a terrific opportunity to meet and discuss with staff the progress of your children and how we can continue to work together to maximise their educational outcomes.

Course Selection 2024

Our planning for 2024 is well underway. All students from Years 7 – 11 have been afforded the opportunity to select subjects for next year. At Rosehill, we run a tailored curriculum, which essentially allows for an individualised program at every year level.

This is a complex process and subject offerings are based on student choice and staffing availability. Please be mindful that first choices are not always feasible because some subjects are full, or they simply do not attract enough interest to run. The timetabling team will communicate directly with students and families if back up choices are not available.

Author Visit/Incursions/Camps

It has been terrific to see many incursions and guest speakers visit the school.

• Of note was author Morris Gleitzman, who presented to our Year 8 students.

• Medieval day was also a popular activity for our Year 8 Humanities classes.

• Year 10 have had several guest speakers this term. Recently a member from the Pat Cronin foundation attended and spoke about the consequences of a coward punch. The Year 10s were certainly attentive and engaged.

• We look forward to the Tasmanian Tour which is due to depart in the last week of term.

• Athletics day was also a great success, and it was pleasing to have good weather and students actively participating in a variety of sports and activities.

Facilities

There has been a delay to works due to start in the school Gymnasium. The revised start date will now be Saturday 9^th September. We look forward to new facilities in the ECA.

The C block building works are progressing well with all framing and most of the roof on. The external brick work and cladding is also well underway especially on the east and south side of the building.

Book of the Week

I’ve recently start reading the Trauma Cleaner by Sarah Krasnostein. It’s based on a true story here in Melbourne. Very dark but an interesting read. What are you reading? Please encourage your children to read every day. The benefits are significant.

Once again, the VCE VM Year 11 students with the help of the following enthusiastic and tireless teachers: Mr Raiti, Ms Mortellaro, Ms O’Malley, Ms Georgiades and Ms Filippone ran a very successful fundraising BBQ on Athletics day. Although we had only nine students who attended from our class, they were eager to help during the whole day. From loading Mr Raiti’s trailer with food, drinks (and of course the BBQ itself), cooking the meat, serving the hungry crowds, and finally packing up and cleaning of the grounds at the end of the event!!! A special mention to our regular parent helper, Mr Ahmet Karabay, who has always donated sausages to our events and leaves his workplace for a few hours to help us. Unfortunately for us his son is in Year 12, and this was Ahmet’s last BBQ. Thanks, Ahmet, for being part of our dream team for the past six years, we appreciated your friendship.

The money we raised on the day just over -$900 - will support our fundraising for The Salvation Army and will assist in subsidising our Barista course in Term 4.

All up it was a great day; although it was cold, the sun was shining all day and the students enjoyed themselves.

VCE VM COORDINATOR

It was with great pleasure, on Wednesday 26th July, that we welcomed Vice-Principal Mr Takahisa Kadoya, Ms Asuka Noro and 10 students from Kogakkan High School in Japan to Rosehill Secondary College for a 10-day exchange program. The visit was eagerly anticipated, as it had been four years since the last group visited Rosehill.

Whilst at Rosehill, the Kogakkan students teamed up with their host students and attended many classes. They also enjoyed a terrific morning at Avondale Primary School where they ran engaging activities with the Grade 6 students.

The Japanese students enjoyed many wonderful experiences with their host families as well as a trip to Melbourne Zoo with their host students. The Kogakkan group also enjoyed a ride on Puffing Billy, followed by a BBQ lunch at Emerald Lake cooked by our Master Chefs Mr Soumalias and Mr Connors. Spectacular views of Melbourne were also enjoyed from Mt Dandenong.

The most rewarding part of the program, however, was to see the friendships that formed between the students and their host families. The group returned to Japan on Saturday morning and many tears were shed at the airport as we bid our visitors farewell with the expression ‘ja mata’ (see you again).

The program has been running for more than 20 years and it would not be a success without the support of the school community. I would like to thank the host families that supported the exchange program and ensured that our guests had a wonderful time. This year’s host students were Nikki Amartuvshin, Mason Beeck, Gorja Bhardwaj, Lucy Borsboom, Noah Chun, Audrey Cook, Jeremy Jeffries, Emma Knudsen, Locy Lam and Max Mora.

I also wish to thank Rosehill staff for welcoming the students into their classes and assisting with the welcome assembly. Thank you also to all staff who assisted with aspects of the organisation and planning, including Ms Creed, Ms Davies, Mr Campbell, Ms Kelly, Ms Bonnet and the music team, and the library staff and administration staff for their support. A very special thank you, however, goes to Mr Hayakawa and Ms Snow who took over the organisation of the program whilst I was on long service leave.

In 2024 it is anticipated that a group of Rosehill students will travel to Japan. Any students keen to visit Kogakkan High School and experience the wonders of Japan, including a trip to Tokyo Disneyland, should see Mr Hayakawa, Ms Harbourd or Ms Snow for further information.

KOGAKKAN EXCHANGE PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Would you like your child to experience the beauty of the Japanese culture? How about joining us on the 2024 Trip to Japan? All students are welcome regardless of the language they are studying at school.

Highlights of the trip will include -

• a visit to Tokyo Disneyland
• beautiful historical places in Kyoto
• the peace park museum in Hiroshima.

We will also visit Kogakkan High School, our sister school in Mie prefecture, and stay with their families. The last trip was extremely successful and those students who have taken part in this program have found it to be one of their most rewarding experiences.

The trip to Japan will take place from 14^th to 27^th of September 2024. We intend to depart a week before the Term 3 break and return during the break.

The cost of the trip is approximately $5,567.50 (with 15 students), however this may change due to the exchange rate and the number of participants.

On Friday 18th August, the Year 11 Psychology students attended an excursion to the District Docklands to consolidate their understanding of visual perception principles. We visited the Artvo immersive trick art gallery which gave us an opportunity to interact with artwork in an original way through by photographing ourselves and becoming part of the art. We were able to live inside a ‘world of illusion’ and had a lot of fun taking funny photos in different scenes, locations and fantasy worlds. Some of the crowd favourites were the Enchanted room, Sci-Fi room, Oceans room and Illusions Room.

Our second activity was to investigate different visual perception principles including Depth Perception and Gestalt Perception principles throughout the District Docklands area. These principles are used in our every day lives – in art, architecture, advertising, road signs, and even for health and safety. In fact, animals and humans depend on visual perception principles for their own survival.

Students spent the afternoon completing a scavenger hunt, where they were required to locate and capture images of certain visual perception principles in the field and upload these for assessment.

It was a great day, the students were amazing and we didn’t lose anyone – not even the teachers!

The Year 11 Environmental studies class recently planted native trees near the new carpark at the oval.

This activity will benefit the school in years to come and also ties into many areas of the curriculum including the carbon cycle, biodiversity, climate change, pollution and water management.

The class worked very well planting the trees and would like to thank Mr Cooper for donating the mulch at short notice.
